This weekend — at FOSSY 2026 [0], Software Freedom Conservancy honored
Mark J. Wielaard [1] — decades-long GNU contributor, Valgrind [2] and
Elfutils [3] maintainer, and Sourceware [4] volunteer with the second
annual Distinguished Service Award in Software Freedom. The award
included a laser-etched lucite trophy and a cash award of one billion
binary USD (US$1,024 for those who prefer decimal).

This award is granted annually to a FOSS contributor who has
demonstrated many years of dedicated service to software freedom in both
volunteer and professional capacities. Mark Wielaard fits this criterion
perfectly.

Mark began his work in Free Software as a volunteer for the Classpath
project [5] in the late 1990s. At the time, creating a FOSS
reimplementation of the proprietary Java language and its runtime
libraries was an extremely urgent need for the future of software
freedom. Later, Mark shifted his focus to gcj — a front-end to the GNU
Compiler Collection for Java.

When the for-profit entity in control of Java (Sun (now Oracle))
released some of their core Java libraries and infrastructure as FOSS,
Mark led the IcedTea [6] effort that sought to reconcile those releases
with the existing Classpath libraries.

Once the future of Java language infrastructure that respected software
freedom was secured, Mark moved on to other projects. Mark became (and
remains to this day) the maintainer of the Valgrind project — an
instrumentation framework for building dynamic analysis tools for
software. And concentrated his efforts on debuggability efforts,
contributing to projects like systemtap [7] and elfutils. Mark is also a
member of the DWARF Debugging Standard Committee. [8]

Mark is one of many key FOSS developers who has designed his career so
that his employers have funded much of his FOSS work. Nevertheless, Mark
continues his volunteer work after hours as a key contributor who
maintains Sourceware — the oldest FOSS collaboration and developer
infrastructure hostingite in history.

We at SFC thank Mark for his decades of service to software freedom, and
we are proud to announce Mark J. Wielaard as the second annual winner of
the Distinguished Service Award in Software Freedom. You can also read
