How wide should that column be?

The width of the content varies a lot - just like commit messages do. 
Commit messages must be truncated anyway, so having them in the same 
column seems like a good idea.

(Now, I think it would be good to also have the "expand" button move 
from a separate column to be shown as the first label ...)

Yes, that needs a bit of tweaking across browsers. Perhaps less padding 
on the td and margins on the content. And perhaps also related to the 
positioning of avatars and checkboxes and how they influence spacing.
